Susie Haigh and podnip

podnip is the pet name my mum had for me when I was a little girl… I don’t know where it came from, but it stuck, and to my close family I’m still known as ‘pod’. The rest of the world know me as Susie, but when I decided to turn my hobby into a little business, podnip felt like a good name that seemed to fit the designs that I create.

After studying History of Art at Glasgow University, I worked for a number of years in London as an art director. In 2007 my Scottish husband finally got his heart’s desire and we moved back to Glasgow with our two young children.

Leaving my full-time job and starting a family, has been a lovely opportunity for me to rediscover my love of textiles, sewing, and all-round crafting! Glasgow itself is a brilliant inspiration, full of crafty goings-on and talented people.

I love sketching and doodling designs for my bags and purses, inspired by nature, my children’s drawings, colour combinations and retro fabrics. I often use pieces of vintage fabric in my creations. I love textiles, especially 50s / 60s / 70s fabric and have to force myself to actually use some of my favourite finds in my products, as I can’t bear to see them leave.

I started out making things for friends, as a good way of addressing this fabric hoarding addiction and podnip gradually grew from there. I’m currently adding screenprinted designs to my shop.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look at my work, please feel free to get in touch if you would like me to make you something.
